BANGALORE: Bangalore-based GangaGen Biotechnologies has entered into an agreement with Elanco Animal Health, a division of Eli Lily, for research and commercialisation of the formers phage product for the treatment of an infectious disease in cattle. Phage or Bacteriophage is a virus which is used to treat bacteria infected diseases.

GangaGen president J Ramachandran said that their product has finished certain level of field trials and is awaiting one large field trail, after which the product may hit the market by 07.

The estimated cost of this trail is around $5m and this will be funded by Elanco. The phage product of GangaGen will be used to control E.coli pathogen which affects cattle. It is estimated that 140m cattle are slaughtered for meat every year and in the last three years, 25m pounds of beef had been recalled due to this disease.

Mr Ramachandran said their product will first hit the markets of US and Canada through Elanco and later they may look into alliances for entering South America and Europe.

GangaGen expects that by 10, its revenues from animal products division will touch $50m. The cost of current phage project has touched $3m and the first milestone payment from Elanco is expected in January 06. Mr Ramachandran said that they are also talking with various venture capitalists in US and India to raise $8m for future expansion.or treatment of cattle diseaseAdd to Clippings
